Ingredients
- 1½ pounds ground beef preferably 80% lean
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 4 pineapple rings fresh or canned, drained and patted dry
- ¼ cup teriyaki sauce divided
- 4 slices Cheddar cheese or pepper jack cheese
- 4 hamburger buns split
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 4 lettuce leaves
- 4 slices red onion
- ¼ cup mayonnaise optional
Instructions
- Preheat the grill: Heat a gas or charcoal grill to medium-high, about 400–450°F. Clean and lightly oil the grates.
- Form the patties: Divide the beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape into patties slightly wider than the buns. Season both sides with salt and pepper.
- Prepare the pineapple: Brush the pineapple rings with 2 tablespoons of the teriyaki sauce.
- Grill the burgers: Grill the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred doneness. For food safety, cook ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F. Brush with the remaining teriyaki sauce during the final minute.
- Add cheese: Place one slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking. Cover the grill until melted.
- Grill the pineapple and buns: Grill the pineapple for 2–3 minutes per side, until caramelized and marked. Toast the buns cut-side down for about 1 minute.
- Assemble: Spread mayonnaise on the buns, if using. Layer each bottom bun with lettuce, a cheeseburger patty, grilled pineapple, and red onion. Add the top bun and serve immediately.
