In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, egg, and melted butter.
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just blended. Do not overmix - it's okay if the batter is a bit lumpy.
Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium-high heat.
Pour 1/4 cup of batter onto the griddle for each pancake. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip and cook the other side until golden brown.
Repeat with the remaining batter.
Serve the pancakes warm with your favorite toppings such as maple syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
