Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 1/2 cup split yellow lentils (moong dal)
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • 1 inch ginger grated
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Method
 

  1. Wash the rice and lentils together and soak them in water for 30 minutes. Then, drain and set aside.
  2. Heat ghee in a large pot over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes, green chilies, ginger, and garlic. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
  5. Add the turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Stir well to combine.
  6. Add the drained rice and lentils to the pot and mix everything together.
  7. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Then reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for about 20-25 minutes or until the rice and lentils are cooked.
  8. Check for seasoning and adjust if needed.
  9. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves before serving.
