Rumi Spice – Hand harvested, Premium Afghan Saffron –

Good saffronI buy other Rumi spices at WF and enjoy using them but my store doesn't carry this, even though it's one of their signature products. Seems like high quality saffron to me – wonderful smell even through the sealed container, large red threads. Given the couple of comments about quantity, I put this on my Tanita scale and it came to 1.022 grams. Can't wait to cook with this!

Good flavor, slightly underweight, but a lot was powder.Flavor and scent-wise, this is very nice saffron. I only bought a small quantity as a test (1/2 gram), because of other reviews about weight.
I have a milligram scale. I'm on a low salt diet and I cook/salt from a salt cellar. lol. I use it to keep myself trained on "a pinch this size = x milligrams of salt". The scale is pretty accurate. The weight was 6% off. On one hand, if the moisture content changed from when the product was originally packaged, that could easily account for the difference. And we're talking cents, here. On the other hand, if I were buying a larger quantity like an ounce…that's $10.
My bigger problem is that of the .47 grams I received, almost 40% was broken down pieces and powder, not threads. It isn't that big of a deal, because it taste/scent is very good, but it sort of makes it hard to judge between recipes how much saffron to use. (e.g. the first time I used about 20 threads. For repeating the recipe, how much is that in powder and broken pieces?)
So. Would I buy again? Probably. The flavor was great, and I have to assume that everyone isn't getting saffron powder rather than saffron, or the reviews would reflect that. lol. Plus I applaud what they are doing from a social responsibility standpoint. YMMV.

Great Saffron!Since I bought this Saffron I have used it to made Gulab Jamun Cakes, Kheer, and Biryanis. It has never failed me – the flavor and color is just spectacular! I also really appreciate the background of this company – they are a team of US military veterans that partnered with local Afghan farms which employ more than 1900 Afghani women. Their mission is to empower Afghani women. No I did not receive this product for free to review – I just did some research re: the company. I am definitely sold on purchasing from this company.

Quality! This is really great Saffron. You get a lot of flavor with just a little bit. Most don't understand that making the Saffron Tea is simple. Take a small bottle of bottled water and add just a little saffron; start small; just a little pinch. Shake the bottle and put it in the refrigerator overnight. You will notice the color change from clear to a yellow. If it turns dark yellow just split it between another bottle as you may have used too much Saffron. Once you find your preference you will just as happy as I am. The longer it steeps the better is gets!

Fabulous saffronI started buying saffron from Rumi Spice because they were recommended by Christopher Kimball's Milk Street Magazine and podcast. I had never gotten very excited by it before, but I found out what I'd tried before must have either been old or mixed with something else, because this stuff is wonderful! I've made a couple of their recipes and an America's Test Kitchen recipe, and the scent and flavor will draw you across the room. I make Rumi's Easy Saffron Rice on a regular basis and eat it just by itself because the flavor is so rich. Saffron is now a staple in my kitchen.
