French bread, also known as baguette, is a long and thin loaf of bread with a crispy crust and a soft interior. It is a staple in French cuisine and is often enjoyed with butter, cheese, or used to make sandwiches.

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 teaspoons salt

Method
 

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add the flour and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  6. Punch down the dough and shape it into a long baguette shape.
  7. Place the dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Using a sharp knife, make 3-4 diagonal cuts on the top of the dough.
  9. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until it is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  10. Let the bread cool slightly before slicing and enjoying!
