Bobotie

Bobotie is a traditional South African dish that is both savory and sweet. It's made with minced meat (usually beef or lamb), mixed with spices like curry powder, turmeric, and cinnamon. Then it's baked with an egg-based topping and served with rice or mashed potatoes.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 slices bread soaked in milk and squeezed dry
  • 2 tablespoons curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons Chutney (apricot or mango chutney works well)
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for cooking
For the topping:
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup milk

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Heat a little olive oil in a pan and sauté the onion and garlic until fragrant and translucent.
  3. Add the ground beef or lamb and cook until browned.
  4. Stir in the curry powder, turmeric, cinnamon, chutney, and vinegar. Mix well.
  5. Add the soaked bread to the mixture and season with salt and pepper. Stir until combined.
  6. Transfer the mixture to a greased oven-proof dish and smooth the top.
  7. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk for the topping. Pour it over the meat mixture.
  8. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden and set.
  9. Once cooked, remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve the Bobotie with rice or mashed potatoes and enjoy!
