Ingredients

  • 1 pound mixed seafood (such as fish fillets, shrimp, clams, squid)
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 red bell pepper diced
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes canned or fresh
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cups seafood broth or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro or parsley for garnish

Method

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the onions, garlic, and red bell pepper. Sauté until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
  2. Add the tomato paste and diced tomatoes to the pot. Stir well to combine.
  3. Pour in the seafood or vegetable broth. Add the Chinese five-spice powder, soy sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine all the flavors.
  4. Bring the broth to a simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
  5. Add the seafood to the pot. If using fish fillets, cut them into bite-sized pieces. Stir gently to coat the seafood with the broth.
  6. Cover the pot and cook for another 5-7 minutes, or until the seafood is cooked through and the clams have opened. Discard any clams that remain closed.
  7. Taste the broth and adjust the seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve the Chinese cioppino in bowls, garnished with fresh cilantro or parsley. Serve with crusty bread or steamed rice.
