Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
All

Method

  1. In a small bowl, mix the yeast, sugar, and warm water. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Stir until the dough comes together, then knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and place a baking sheet or pizza stone in the oven to heat up.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal-sized balls. Roll out each ball into a circle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Place the rolled-out dough on the hot baking sheet or pizza stone and bake for about 3-4 minutes, or until puffed up and lightly browned.
  8. Remove from the oven and cover with a clean kitchen towel to keep them warm and soft.
  9. Serve the pita bread warm with your favorite fillings or dips.
  10. Enjoy!
