Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean beef (such as top round or flank steak)
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 tablespoon red pepper flakes (optional)
All

Equipment

  • shish kabob skewers
  • hickory chips
  • smoker

Method

  1. Slice the beef against the grain into thin strips, about 1/4 inch thick.
  2. In a bowl, mix together soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, smoked paprika, and red pepper flakes to make the marinade.
  3. Add the beef strips to the marinade, making sure they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
  4. Preheat your oven to 175°F (or the lowest setting).
  5. Place the marinated beef strips on a wire rack set over a baking sheet to catch any drips.
  6. Bake the beef strips for about 3-4 hours, or until they are dried and chewy. You can also use a food dehydrator if you have one.
  7. Let the beef jerky cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
  8. Enjoy!

Notes

The preparation time for beef jerky is typically around 15-20 minutes to slice the beef, mix the marinade, and let it marinate. The cook time can vary depending on the method you use. If you’re using an oven, it can take around 3-4 hours at a low temperature (around 175°F). If you’re using a food dehydrator, it may take a similar amount of time. Just keep an eye on the beef jerky as it cooks to make sure it reaches your desired level of dryness and chewiness.
