Shabbat Soda Bread is a delicious variation of traditional soda bread that is often enjoyed during the Jewish Sabbath, known as Shabbat. It is a simple yet flavorful bread made with basic ingredients like flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk. Some variations may include additional ingredients like raisins, caraway seeds, or herbs to enhance the taste. The bread is typically soft, slightly sweet, and perfect for enjoying with meals or as a snack.
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt. If you're adding raisins or caraway seeds, you can mix them in at this stage.
Gradually pour in the buttermilk while stirring the mixture. The dough should come together and be slightly sticky.
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead it for a minute until it forms a ball. Avoid over-kneading, as this can make the bread tough.
Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it onto the greased baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to score a shallow "X" on top of the loaf.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
