Peel the onions and slice them into thick rings. Separate the rings and set aside.
In a bowl, combine the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.
Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl.
Dip each onion ring into the buttermilk, then coat it in the flour mixture. Shake off any excess flour.
Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (180°C).
Fry the onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
