Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
In a large bowl, combine the flour and 1/2 cup of sugar. Add the cold butter and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs.
Add the egg and mix until the dough comes together. Shape into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
In another bowl, mix the ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup of sugar, lemon zest, and chocolate chips if using.
Roll out the pastry dough on a floured surface to fit a 9-inch tart pan. Press the dough into the pan and trim any excess.
Spread the ricotta mixture evenly over the pastry.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.
Allow the crostata to cool before slicing and serving.
