Carnitas sopes is a delicious Mexican dish made with corn masa dough formed into a thick base, similar to a small, thick tortilla. The base is then fried to create a crispy outer layer and topped with shredded pork carnitas, along with various toppings like salsa, cheese, lettuce, and sour cream.
In a large bowl, mix the masa harina with water to form a smooth dough. Divide the dough into 8 equal balls and flatten each ball into a thick disc shape to make the sopes bases.
In a large skillet, cook the pork shoulder pieces over medium heat until browned. Add the chopped onion, garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the pork is tender and fully cooked.
Meanwhile, in a separate skillet, fry the masa discs in a little oil until crispy and cooked through on both sides.
Once the sopes bases are crispy, top each one with a spoonful of the pork carnitas mixture.
Add your desired toppings such as salsa, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and avocado.
