Dous Makos is a traditional Haitian dessert made of layers of sweet, dense cake and creamy frosting.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Crushed nuts for garnish (optional)

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease and flour an 8×8 inch baking pan.
  2. In a bowl, cream together the sugar and butter until light and fluffy.
  3. Gradually add the flour and evaporated milk to the mixture, alternating between the two until well combined.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Divide the batter into two equal portions. Add food coloring to one portion if desired.
  6. Pour the plain batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
  7. Carefully spoon the colored batter on top of the plain batter, spreading it evenly.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the Dous Makos cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
  10. Garnish with crushed nuts if desired.
