Masala Mackerel and Daal is an Indian dish that consists of mackerel fish cooked in a spicy masala sauce and served with a lentil stew called daal. The fish is usually marinated with a mix of spices such as turmeric, cumin, coriander, and chili powder before being pan-fried or grilled to perfection. The daal is made with split yellow lentils and flavored with spices such as cumin, mustard seeds, and garam masala.

Ingredients
  

For Masala Mackerel:
  • 4 mackerel fillets
  • 1 tablespoon turmeric powder
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon cumin powder
  • 1 tablespoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
For Daal:
  • 1 cup split yellow lentils
  • 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
  • 1 tablespoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon garam masala
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Salt to taste

Method
 

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the turmeric, cumin, masala, coriander, chili powder, and salt. Rub the spice mixture onto the mackerel fillets and set aside.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the mackerel fillets and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until cooked through. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. In a separate pot, rinse the lentils and drain. Add enough water to cover the lentils and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until the lentils are soft and fully cooked.
  4. In another pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add the cumin and mustard seeds and cook until they start to pop. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2-3 minutes, until softened.
  5. Add the cooked lentils to the onion mixture and stir to combine. Add the garam masala and salt to taste.
  6. Serve the Masala Mackerel with the Daal on the side. Serve with rice and vegetables Enjoy!
