Ingredients

  • 1 cup basmati rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 small onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh cilantro chopped (optional for garnish)
All

Method

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps remove excess starch.
  2. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pot and sauté until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Stir in the turmeric powder and salt, then add the rinsed rice. Mix well to coat the rice with the spices.
  5. Pour in the water and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid, and let the rice simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until all the water is absorbed and the rice is tender.
  6. Once the rice is cooked, fluff it with a fork and let it sit covered for a few more minutes to steam.
  7. Garnish with fresh chopped cilantro before serving.
  8. Enjoy!
